CHAPTER 8

MADISON

It was breathtakingly beautiful.

Walking in, her eyes touched on everything in awe, marveling that they were actually here. This was incredibly beautiful and lived up to the reputation it had. Each table was covered with a linen tablecloth and had a rose in a tiny vase to make it special.

The walls were covered with wood lattice work that enclosed a massive temperature-controlled room where rack after rack of wine bottles were encased. It was illuminated by recessed lighting, giving it a glow, and the ambiance screamed romance…

This was their first date. She thought in a daze as they were led back to their table. She blindly tugged at his arm while admiring the rows and rows of grapes lining the hills outside of the windows they were currently passing. It was like seeing something out of a dream.

“Um, if you are trying to impress me, it’s working,” she said baldly, not bothering to lower her voice or try to play hard to get. If this was what he was bringing to the table, she was mentally hopping in the seat like it was a throne, praying it wouldn’t end up being an electric chair – and heard his soft laughter as he touched her hand.

She dragged her eyes away from the fields of grapes and saw his warm smile and tender gaze, swallowing the emotional lump in her throat.

“I’m glad,” he murmured – and pulled out her chair, waiting for her.

That lump in her throat just grew ten sizes as her eyes stung with unshed tears at the romantic gesture. He was really treating her nicely, more than she ever imagined, and not one guy she’d ever dated did any of this. She let out her breath, looking away from him and prayed he didn’t notice how emotional she was getting. She needed a few minutes to mentally calm herself and…

His fingers touched her chin, turning her face to him, right there in the restaurant, only to see his eyes widen in surprise – and worry.

“Madison? Are you crying?”

And she made a horrifying half-snort, half-laugh before she started sobbing like someone had just destroyed a prized memento that had been in the family for years.

“Shhh,” he said softly, pulling her close… and she bawled even harder. He was patting her nervously on her back, trying to comfort her.

“Sir? Perhaps the young lady would like to visit the powder room?” someone said from nearby – and she hesitated, feeling Emmett tense, realizing she was making a scene in the middle of the restaurant.

She was ruining this!

“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry…”

“Madison,” he began as she pulled back from him, and she waved his hands away, like swatting at a fly.

“I’m high-strung and…”

“You are perfect,” he interrupted – and at his words, she looked at him again, feeling those same tears well up once more as he smiled softly. “You are absolutely perfect, and if you want to go, we can.”

“Nooo,” she practically warbled, except it came out sounding like someone stepped on a cat’s tail.
